While I am no Historian, the similarities are astounding. Smuts was a Boer general who fought colonialist forces in South Africa and led the Boer people through a period of reconciliation with the British after the Boer war. (The Boers suffered terrible atrocities at the hands of the British) His government came out with recommendations to abolish discrimination, and was defeated in the following election no doubt for these views,. He was instrumental in creating the League of Nations and United Nations.

It was in a different time, but he was no doubt a great  home grown world leader. Look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Smuts</description>

		<description>I never knew that Nelson Mandela and Jan Smuts had something in common. It is worrying that such a world moral authority could be disregarded and his name removed and replaced with OR Tambo.
